A Celebration of Young Shin Kim

A Celebration of Young Shin Kim

Muck Teaching Artist of over twenty years, Young Shin Kim, is the winner of this year’s Dr. James Young Arts Legacy Award. This gallery exhibit of her ceramics is curated by her friend and colleague Marsha Judd.

About Young Shin Kim, in her own words: My dialogue with clay began many years ago, and it continues to bring me joy, energy, and a deep sense of purpose. As an immigrant from Korea living between two cultures and two languages, I strive to weave together artistic influences from both East and West. Throughout my career in ceramics, I have been dedicated to reinterpreting the rich traditions and heritage of my homeland, transforming them into contemporary expressions of my own. One example of this is my use of buncheong, a traditional Korean decorative technique, which I have adapted and expanded beyond its convention to explore new artistic possibilities.  For nearly two decades, I have also shared my passion for ceramics through teaching at the MUCK. In my classes, I always encourage students to explore their individuality and express their unique voices through their work.
