InsideOut Prison Arts Program

We present an evening of readings featuring the written works of formerly incarcerated young adults from InsideOUT Writers’ classes, in collaboration with the California Arts Council’s prison project, and the Muckenthaler Cultural Center. The mission of InsideOUT Writers is to reduce the juvenile recidivism rate by providing a range of services to meet the needs of currently and formerly incarcerated youth and young adults. Using creative writing as a catalyst for personal transformation, these young people are empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully re-integrate into our communities, becoming advocates for their future. we will also feature a small exhibition of photos taken by Peter Merts who has been documenting the Arts in Corrections program since its inception. These photos portray the depth and variety of art forms and students participating in this essential rehabilitative program.
