Oscar Castillo: L@s Raramuris/Tarahumaras

In 1972 Oscar Castillo photographed the culture of the Tarahumara long distance runners in the high Sierras of Chihuahua, Mexico for the London Observer and the Boston Globe. Only a few images saw publication and until last year the rest lay unprinted for four decades. This remarkable suite of photographs by Oscar Castillo, best known for capturing on film L.A.’s Chicano Moratorium, preserve a moment in time for a traditional society’s struggle to preserve a way of life in a changing world.
