INTERCULTURAL

Intercultural

On View: Oct 6-Dec 8

Closing Event: Thursday, December 8th at 4pm

This photography collection features 25 self-portraits of artist Sheinina Raj in the traditional and authentic finery of various regions and nations with the backdrop of music by Nelly Furtado.

Each portrait and culture is also accompanied by an essay. The exhibition is further supported by four Quadraphonic Sound and Light boxes made in collaboration with Grammy winner Nelly Furtado.

Raj’s own crossborder heritage and intercontinental family history in Fijian, Canadian, American and British cultures are what first inspired her to embark on this serial self-transformation.

Raj has exhibited Intercultural around the world, including the U.S., Canada, Middle-East, Asia and the South Pacific. She has spoken publicly on behalf of Global Affairs Canada, the British Council and the Govt. of Fiji with missions to advance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In 2020 she was selected to represent the United States for the United Nations 75th Anniversary.

Peter Frank, celebrated art critic and frequent contributor to The Huffington Post, Art in America, and ARTnews, a long-time critic for LA Weekly, and known for curating shows at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, had a few choice words to say about the Muck’s current exhibition INTERCULTURAL by Sheinina Lolita Raj, curated by Lisa M. Berman:

"Thank you, Sheinina! Your project is panhuman in so many ways — not least in insisting that civilization is based on culture, not race, indeed, that race is a construct more fragile and misleading than culture."

The digital version of Sheinina’s new book ”INTERCULTURAL Worldwide: Diversity. Equity. Inclusion” will be FREE through November 4th. Also, 10% of all sales of a soft or hardcover copy purchased will be donated to The Muck.

Signed poster available for $20.

All works in the exhibition are available for purchase with a portion of all sales supporting arts education programs at The Muck.

If you are interested in purchasing artwork or would like to schedule a curatorial walk-through, please contact Lisa M. Berman at curator@themuck.org.
