We are proud to announce this year's James Young Arts Legacy Award recipient is Dr. Monica Lee!

Dr. Monica Lee is the coordinator of piano studies and the Piano Teaching Certificate Program at Fullerton College.  Each semester, the piano program provides service to over 300 students taking beginning piano, piano ensemble, applied piano, jazz piano, and piano pedagogy courses.

Monica Lee received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University in 2001 and Masters in Business Administration from UCI in May 2022.  Prior to her Fullerton College job, Monica taught at Northwestern University and Concordia University in Chicago.  She started giving private piano lessons at the age of sixteen. As a pianist, she performed orchestral and solo pieces in the United States, Korea, and Russia. Monica served as a Catholic Church choir director in the U.S. and in Korea.

 In 2013 Monica presented a workshop on the ‘Importance of Piano Sight-Reading’ based on her book, Piano Sight-Reading: A Systematic Approach in the World Piano Conference held in Novi Sad, Serbia. In September of 2010, Monica presented ‘Long Distance Piano Instruction’ in TEDx in conjunction with the Yamaha Corporation, and accompanied Charity Tillemann-Dick for the opening session in a TEDMED talk in San Diego. She enjoys presenting various topics for MTAC local branch teachers and for local piano studios to share music and knowledge with primary and high school students.

Monica served as the chair of Fullerton Piano Ensemble Festival for over fifteen years. She adjudicates for various MTAC and MTNA competitions and works as an evaluator for the Royal Conservatory Examinations in Canada.  Additionally, she serves on the Disklavier Educational Network Board of Advisory committee, and is a board member of ArmstrongLee Scholarship Fund, founded by her parents, Myung Woo and Chan Soo Lee in 2000.

Currently, Monica is collaborating with Dr. Helen Marlais on their piano method book, Succeeding at Class Piano for college/university keyboard skills classes.
