Presentations by James Dahl, prison arts instructor and photographer Peter Merts, who has documented prison arts through vivid and moving color images. Mr. Merts has eight photographs in the exhibition, and will present a slideshow of many more chronicling California's Arts-in-Correction not in the exhibition. He is the author of the book Paths of Discovery: Art Practice and Its Impact in California Prisons, now in its 2nd Edition. James Dahl teaches painting to prison inmates in several California prisons, working with prisoners to help them develop fundamentals of color, application, and composition, and to use art as a vehicle for self-expression. He is represented in the exhibition by an epic scaled allegorical painting Search for a Diver, inspired by his work with teaching in prisons. Mr. Dahl will speak about his experiences and show works produced by his inmate students.
