On one family occasion, Albert Muckenthaler's many children and grandchildren celebrate his 72nd birthday in June 1934 in the Muckenthaler home's beautiful courtyard under a trellis. It was a frequent gathering space for entertaining. Cousins often speak of regular dinners in the garden with extended family. This tradition has led the cultural center to start a successful farm dinner series of fundraisers featuring local farm-raised food, wines, and guest chefs. The rear courtyard, with its original wooden trellis, provides partial shade for some of Walter's more exotic tropical plants. The gateway to the West led to the aviaries. The Italian Garden is just over the wall, where once-tiny palms have shown impressive growth under the California sun.
